Privacy Policy
Last updated: 2 October 2026
The short version
- WordWand is a writing game for children aged 5–12. A parent or guardian creates the account; children only use a nickname.
- We collect only what we need to run the game: the parent’s email, the child’s nickname and level, and the writing and pictures your child makes.
- No ads. No third-party tracking. We never sell data.
- Writing is sent to Google Gemini on Vertex AI to give feedback and draw pictures. It is not used to train AI models.
- We delete data when you ask, or automatically after 400 days without any activity.
1. Who we are
WordWand (“WordWand”, “we”, “us”) operates the WordWand website and web app. If you have any question about this policy or your family’s data, email hello@wordwand.theorypractice.app.
2. Children and parental consent
WordWand is made for children, but accounts belong to adults. Only a parent or legal guardian may create an account, by signing in with an email code, Google or Apple. By creating an account and adding a child profile, you confirm that you are that child’s parent or guardian and consent to us collecting and using your child’s information as described here.
We do not ask children for their real name, email address, phone number, photo, location or any other contact details, and the app is designed so children have no way to share them with other people. There are no chat, messaging or public profile features. If you believe a child has created an account without a parent, contact us and we will delete it.
3. What we collect
| Information | Whose | Why we use it |
|---|---|---|
| Email address (and, if you use Google or Apple sign-in, the basic account details they share with us, such as your email and an account identifier) | Parent | To sign you in, keep your account secure, and send service messages such as sign-in codes and weekly reports. |
| Child profile: nickname, writing level, settings | Child | To show the right pictures, prompts and skills for your child’s level. |
| Writing your child types or dictates, and the pictures generated from it | Child | To give coaching questions, spelling hints and scores, draw “Draw it!” pictures, and keep the portfolio and storybooks. |
| Characters your child creates in Imagine mode | Child | So characters can return in later stories. |
| Progress: XP, titles, streaks, word gems, badges, levels, scores and spelling trends | Child | To run the game and to build the parent weekly report. |
| Plan and payment status (we do not store full card numbers) | Parent | To provide the Founding Family pass if you buy it. |
| Basic technical data: IP address, browser type, error logs, and storage on your device needed to keep you signed in | Device | To run the service securely, prevent abuse and fix bugs. |
We do not use advertising cookies, analytics trackers or social media pixels, and we do not build advertising profiles of anyone.
Voice input
“Say it, then fix it” uses the speech recognition built into your web browser. Depending on your browser, the audio may be processed by the browser vendor (for example Apple, Google or Microsoft) under their own privacy terms. WordWand does not receive or store the audio — only the text that appears in the writing box.
4. How AI is used
To give feedback and create pictures, your child’s writing (and the prompt or picture it describes) is processed by Google’s Gemini models through Google Cloud Vertex AI. Under Google Cloud’s terms, this data is used to provide the service to us and is not used to train Google’s models. We do not use your child’s writing to train any AI model either.
Kind-content filters check both the writing and the generated pictures, and the coach is instructed to stay friendly and age-appropriate. AI can make mistakes; if you ever see something that should not be there, please tell us.
5. Who else processes data
We share data only with service providers who help us run WordWand, only for that purpose, and under agreements that protect it:
- Google Cloud (Vertex AI, Gemini) — writing feedback and picture generation.
- Cloudflare — hosting, storage and network security.
- Google and Apple — only if you choose to sign in with them.
- An email delivery provider — to send sign-in codes and reports.
- A payment provider — to process Founding Family payments; they handle your card details directly.
We never sell or rent personal information. We may disclose information if required by law, or to protect the safety of a child or others.
Our providers may process data in countries other than your own, including the United States. Where required, we rely on appropriate safeguards such as standard contractual clauses.
6. How long we keep data
- Account, writing, pictures and progress are kept while the account is in use, so your child’s portfolio is there when they come back.
- If an account has no activity for 400 days, we delete it and everything in it.
- When you ask us to delete data, we delete it from our live systems promptly, and from backups within 30 days.
- Technical logs are kept for a short time for security, then deleted.
- Payment records may be kept longer where tax or accounting law requires it.
7. Your choices and rights
As the parent or guardian you can, at any time:
- review your child’s writing, pictures and progress in the app;
- ask for a copy of the information we hold about you or your child;
- correct information, change your child’s nickname or level;
- delete a child profile, or your whole account and all its data;
- withdraw consent — which means deleting the child’s profile, since the game cannot work without processing their writing.
Email hello@wordwand.theorypractice.app from your account’s email address and we will respond within 30 days. Depending on where you live, you may also have the right to complain to your local data protection authority.
8. Security
Data is encrypted in transit (HTTPS) and stored with access limited to the people and systems that need it. Sign-in uses one-time email codes or Google/Apple, so there are no passwords for us to leak. No system is perfectly secure, but we will tell affected parents promptly if a breach affects their data.
9. Changes
If we change this policy in a way that matters, we will update the date above and let parents know by email or in the app before the change takes effect. We will ask for fresh consent before using children’s information in a materially different way.
